Halloween candy sales grew 14% between 2021 and 2022 and this year is on track to be the same. In 2022, US consumers dropped more than $3.7 billion on candy during the six-week period before the holiday.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo950esf00053b6iqkl11gdq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Consumers favorite candy? Chocolate, which Americans bought at almost a 2:1 ratio. And in the world of chocolate, milk chocolate is king: more people bought milk chocolate last Halloween season\u00a0than all other non-chocolate candy combined.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo955451000e3b6i0pryajwn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But while per unit sales of chocolate candy have remained largely stable compared with five years ago, non-chocolate candy is the growth market. Americans bought roughly 7.8% more packages of non-chocolate candy last Halloween season compared to 2018, while package sales of chocolate shrank by 2.5%.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo9563mu000g3b6i2drcx287@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      But there\u2019s one notable exception to non-chocolate candy\u2019s <em>dolce vita<\/em>: Halloween\u2019s iconic candy corn.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo9563mv000h3b6iubzoem9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Americans are buying less and less candy corn, NIQ data shows, and more gummies and marshmallows.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo958bxv000n3b6i9h4j350p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      The number of candy corn packages sold during the Halloween season \u2013 or the six weeks leading up to the first week of November \u2013 have been falling every year since at least 2018, reaching a low of 12.7 million in 2022. As of October 14, Americans have bought 5.3 million packages of the candy this season.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo958osc000p3b6i941rlikt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIt\u2019s not like, \u2018Yeah, it\u2019s OK,\u2019\u201d Beth Kimmerle, the author of \u201cCandy: The Sweet History\u201d and founder of the food industry data company Attribute Analytics, said of Americans\u2019 taste for candy corn. \u201cEither people love it or hate it.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo958osc000q3b6im6szecwr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      By comparison, package sales of gummies and marshmallow candy, which includes Peeps, have each gone up more than 30% since 2018.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo958osc000r3b6it9idbmwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cSo think about a Peep,\u201d Kimmerle said. \u201cYou can coat it with sugar, you can colorize that sugar, you can color the inside of it. You can make it into different shapes. There is a lot of flexibility that you can have with marshmallows.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959bw3000v3b6i3f5n2ckx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cThe flavor is very, very sweet,\u201d said Susan Benjamin, a candy historian and president of the True Treats candy store in West Virginia. \u201cBut it\u2019s not really describable sweetness. And often it sort of defies what it should look like.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc000x3b6is9jepjap@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      In a flavor profile conducted by Attribute Analytics on Oct. 8, the taste panel found candy corn is high on the \u201csweet\u201d flavor while its other flavors are less noticeable and dissipate quickly, according to Kimmerle. The panel described a bag of Nice! Brand candy corn\u2019s flavors as \u201csweet,\u201d followed by artificial vanilla, caramelized sugar and \u201cchemical.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc000y3b6ivqsqxwad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      By contrast, the flavor profile of a variety pack of Albanese Gummi Bear Cubs conducted that same day shows a range of various flavors that linger longer in your mouth and build on one another, Kimmerle said: sweet, artificial cherry, artificial fruit and sour.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc000z3b6i1k5gvo6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Candy corn is offered in other flavors as well, but Kimmerle also emphasizes the importance of a candy\u2019s texture.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00103b6is2zafqav@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cGummies bounce around playfully in your mouth while you\u2019re chewing and then they dissolve,\u201d Kimmerle said. Candy corn, by contrast, feels grainy and crystallized, she said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00113b6i5c4rreqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cIt\u2019s not a marshmallow, it\u2019s not a hard candy. It\u2019s somewhere in between,\u201d Kimmerle said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00123b6icm16vrfi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Without an appealing texture or flavor, what reasons are left to buy candy corn?\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00133b6ip8vgbo5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI would put it into the category of something that people feel compelled to buy because of the nostalgia factor,\u201d Kimmerle said.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00143b6ivfi1xo1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      Benjamin also sees the sentimental appeal of candy corn.\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clo959rgc00153b6iyu1n56eg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n      \u201cI remember it from my childhood, and the younger people don\u2019t,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd candy is as much about memory as it is about the actual taste.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/30\/business\/halloween-favorite-candy-corn-chocolate-dg\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans can\u2019t get enough of Halloween candy.
