US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for a \u201creinvigorated\u201d partnership between the US and Europe based on a shared \u201cgreat civilisation\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a speech at a security conference in Munich on Saturday, Rubio sought to reassure Europeans unnerved by a year of Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs and threats to the Nato transnational alliance.<\/p>\n

He emphasised Washington\u2019s desire to work \u201ctogether with you, our friends here in Europe\u201d, describing \u201ca sacred inheritance, an unbreakable link\u201d that united the US and its European partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe belong together,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are part of one civilisation, western civilisation. We are bound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share, forged by centuries of shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry and the sacrifices our forefathers made.\u201d<\/p>\n

If US President Donald Trump \u201cdemands seriousness and reciprocity\u201d, it was \u201cbecause we care deeply\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Rubio\u2019s address attempted to bolster European audiences still reeling from Trump\u2019s threats to invade Greenland last month, which caused the deepest fissure between the US and the continent in decades.<\/p>\n

It also marked a departure from the combative remarks delivered at the forum last year by US vice-president JD Vance, who accused Europe of repressing freedom of speech and retreating from its \u201cfundamental values\u201d.<\/p>\n

Conference chair Wolfgang Ischinger said Rubio\u2019s conciliatory message of \u201creassurance, of partnership\u201d and \u201cintertwined relations\u201d caused \u201ca sigh of relief through this hall\u201d. <\/p>\n

Ischinger told Rubio his remarks reminded him of \u201cstatements made decades ago by your predecessors\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rubio also said: \u201cIn a time of headlines heralding the end of the transatlantic era, let it be known and clear to all that this is neither our goal nor our wish, because for us Americans, our home may be in the western hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe.\u201d <\/p>\n

However, he repeated many of the same ideas and policy goals set out by Vance last year.<\/p>\n

He lamented the outsourcing of American industry, the non-western dominance of critical supply chains and green energy policies that he said sought to \u201cappease a climate cult\u201d while \u201cimpoverishing our people\u201d.<\/p>\n

Above all, he stressed that Europe and the US faced the threat of mass migration and the prospect of \u201ccivilisation erasure\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNational security\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009is not merely a series of technical questions,\u201d he said. What exactly are we defending?\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009We are defending a great civilisation\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009Only if we are unapologetic in our heritage and proud of this common inheritance can we together begin the work of envisioning and shaping our economic and political future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMass migration\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009continues to be a crisis which is transforming and destabilising societies all across the west,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n

But he insisted that this is \u201cnot an expression of xenophobia. It is not hate. It is a fundamental act of national sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

German defence minister Boris Pistorius challenged \u201cRubio\u2019s vision for the world order\u201d and his claim that the west had \u201coutsourced\u201d its sovereignty to international institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, our international organisations have failed to solve crises and conflicts,\u201d Pistorius said in a speech later on Saturday. \u201cBut the answer cannot be for a great power to go it alone. That might work in the short term. But in a world of more competing great powers this will definitely not work in the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Pistorius said, Europe and the US had to work on \u201creforming and reinvigorating international organisations\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009\u00a0so that they deliver what is crucial: peace and security. We can only do that together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio also criticised the \u201cwelfare states\u201d that he said Europe had pursued at the expense of funding its security.<\/p>\n

Pia Fuhrhop, a political scientist at the German think-tank SWP, said Rubio\u2019s speech came across as polite on the surface, but that he was trying to drag Europe into its Maga mindset. \u201cIt\u2019s a poisoned gift,\u201d she said of his message of working together.<\/p>\n

His remarks were received coolly by members of the audience, too. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot the answer we were looking for,\u201d remarked one German diplomat, saying the speech was geared more for a US \u201cdomestic\u201d audience \u201cthan for us\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was Maga but without any insight,\u201d said another senior European official. \u201cNo mention of Russia, no mention of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But J\u00fcrgen Hardt, a senior member of the German parliament, said that \u201cRubio has remained a believer in Nato, which is positive. We Europeans won\u2019t embark on American culture wars, however.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
